PICNICORE: HELLO TO THE DOROTHY GALE AESTHETIC

In 1939, Judy Garland took to the movie screen to sing one of the most famous songs in cinema history, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” in the iconic film The Wizard of Oz. The movie has remained one of the most referenced and culturally relevant pieces of media from the 1930s and arguably helped make Judy Garland a history-making pop culture phenomenon.

The cast of characters, including Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, along with Glinda the Good Witch of the North, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow, have also remained some of fiction’s most popular characters. Along with its songs, sets, and characters, one of the most notable things about The Wizard of Oz was Dorothy’s gingham dress, fit for a Kansas summer.

The complete outfit consisted of a blue-and-white checkered gingham pinafore with a cream-colored blouse. It was an outfit for a picnic—although not what one would consider the most fashion-forward ensemble of the day, it was functional. Fast forward to 2025, and it looks like Dorothy was a trendsetter almost a century ahead of her time.

One of the latest trends in womenswear is picnicore, characterized by designs inspired by checkered picnic blankets. As absurd as it sounds, it’s a trend that’s been popularized by fashionistas like Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker. Aside from the gingham prints, dresses with fruity prints, like strawberries, have also surged in popularity.

Picnicore is more of a niche trend, but given how The Wizard of Oz is currently permeating the cultural zeitgeist, it makes perfect sense. One of the biggest box office successes of 2024 was Wicked, based on the backstory of the witches of the magical land of Oz, where much of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz takes place. The story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, was told from the perspective of the two witches—how they met at school and what led to Elphaba becoming wicked.

From the film, the green-and-pink aesthetic was born, in what was dubbed “Wickedcore.” The “Wicked” pink aesthetic became an extension of Barbiecore, which was characterized by all things pink and exploded in popularity thanks to the 2023 billion-dollar movie Barbie.

As the public continues to let cinema inform many of their fashion cues, the surge of picnicore is fitting. The trailer for the second part of the Wicked movie, Wicked: For Good, was released in early June. In it, viewers can see the character Dorothy teased—of course, in her signature gingham ensemble.

Wicked: For Good doesn’t debut in theaters until this November, so picnicore is likely to trend through fall. If there was ever a time you wanted anything gingham, now’s the time to embrace it. Grab that picnic basket and the ensemble of the moment.
